Lucy Gwen Gillis research

Lucy was going to study fashion design but a chance meeting with David Attenborourgh made her realize that science was her calling. Her main research is in nutrient and sediment fluxes between coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove forests. Specifically investigating how nutrient fluxes may alter connections between these ecosystems. She would like to provide the science which underpins restoration and conservation of these delicate and important ecosystems; coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove forests.

Currently she is working between Thailand, Singapore (NUS) and Netherlands (NIOZ). However she has 5 years of field research in the tropical coastal seascape in such far flung places as South America (Honduras & Columbia), Pacific (Fiji), Caribbean (Saint Lucia), Europe (Greece) and the Maldives. Her BSc (Hon) in Geological Oceanography is from Bangor University of Wales and her MSc in Marine resource development and management is from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.

Lucy is originally from Scotland and misses her beloved mountains; she still feels you can never get a good whiskey outside of Scotland. She depressingly supports Scottish football (& rugby), thinks that a sense of the ridiculous is a important character trait and has a vague idea where her towel is.
